"It's Our Moonshot": Why Researchers Are Penetrating Into Volcanoes



In a daring scientific endeavour, researchers are undertaking what some are calling the “moonshot of geology”—drilling directly into active volcanoes. Their mission is to unlock the mysteries hidden beneath Earth's surface, improve volcanic monitoring, and harness sustainable geothermal energy.


The Krafla Magma Testbed: A Groundbreaking Initiative


At the heart of this ambitious project is the Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT) in Iceland. Krafla, an active volcano known for its fiery eruptions, presents both challenges and opportunities for scientists. Bjorn Por Guðmundsson, one of the scientists leading the project, describes the operation as unprecedented. “We’re standing on the spot where we are going to drill,” he said. The goal? To advance our understanding of magma, which could ultimately aid in predicting eruptions more accurately and mitigating the risks they pose to nearby communities.





Learning from Magma for Better Monitoring


Despite decades of research, predicting volcanic eruptions remains a significant challenge. By drilling into the magma chamber, scientists hope to observe the behaviour of molten rock in its natural state, gathering data that can refine early warning systems. This information will be invaluable in reducing the devastation caused by sudden eruptions, which often threaten both human life and infrastructure.

Volcanoes harbour vast amounts of heat beneath the Earth's crust, which can be tapped into to generate electricity. Harnessing geothermal energy on this scale would significantly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. Iceland, already a leader in geothermal power, could set a new benchmark with the success of this initiative.
